در كشورهاي مختلف زمان از شير گرفتن متفاوت است و آخرين اطلاعات و توصيه‌ها 2 سالگي و بيشتر را پيشنهاد مي‌كنند (توصيه قرآن كريم 2 سال است اما بيش از 2 سال را منع نكرده است). تصميم در مورد از شير گرفتن به شرايط جسمي و ‌رواني مادر و كودك و ويژگي‌هاي خانواده بستگي دارد. جزييات عملي از شير گرفتن به سن كودك و رويكردي كه مادر در پيش مي‌گيرد، بستگي دارد...
 
بهترين روش از شير گرفتن، روش تدريجي است كه همراه با عشق و علاقه و هم براي مادر و هم براي كودك بسيار راحت‌تر است و بدون مشكل و در طي چند ماه اتفاق مي‌افتد، بنابراين بعد از 2 سال كامل كه كودك از شير مادر بهره‌مند شده و 5 وعده در روز (3 وعده غذاي اصلي و 2 ميان‌وعده) غذا مي‌خورد و مايعات را هم با ليوان مي‌نوشد، مي‌توان 2-1 وعده شير پاستوريزه يا آبميوه را جايگزين شير مادر کرد (با ليوان يا فنجان بنوشد). در اين روش بهتر است هر 3-2 روز يك بار بيش از يك وعده شيردهي حذف نشود. در اين زمان نقش مادر آن است كه خود پيشنهاد شير دادن نكند و اگر زماني هم كودك تمايل به شير خوردن داشت، از او دريغ نکند، به ويژه وقتي كودك بيمار است كه فقط اشتها به خوردن شير دارد و غذاي ديگري را نمي‌خورد (از شير گرفتن نبايد در زمان بيماري و استرس باشد). در اين روش چون از شير گرفتن به‌تدريج انجام مي‌شود مشکلات عصبي رواني و تغييرات هورموني مادر كه در يكباره از شير گرفتن اتفاق مي‌افتد، به وجود نمي‌آيد و كودك نيز دچار ضربه رواني نمي‌شود. به اين ترتيب كودك كم‌كم علاقه به شير خوردن را از دست مي‌دهد و ممكن است خودش يك‌باره آن را كنار بگذارد.
روش‌هاي عملي كه كمك مي‌كند، عبارتند از: جهت شيردهي نه پستان را ارائه كنيد و نه پس بكشيد، تغييراتي در روند معمول شيردهي ايجاد كنيد، حواس شيرخوار را از شير خوردن پرت كنيد، شير خوردن را با چيز ديگري جايگزين نکنيد، شير خوردن را به تأخير بيندازيد و جايزه بدهيد.
